HOW IT BEGINS:
December 16, 1960 Brooklyn, New York When Theresa Dempsey woke up that morning and took her first look out the window, she had no idea the view she was seeing would, shortly and literally, never look the same again. Nor that the almost-idyllic life she had enjoyed the last several years with Tom and their two kids, Tommy and Megan, would likewise be forever changed.
Their street, Sterling Place, looked the same as it ever did, like every other block in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood. Four-story brownstones up and down the street converted into four-unit apartments. The first floors had been turned into little street-front stores specializing in one thing or another. When they’d moved in three years ago, Tommy Junior screamed with joy when he saw two candy stores on their block. A Fanny Farmer’s on one corner, and a Ma and Pa store a few doors down from their place. In the warmer months, it sold homemade ice cream, too.
This block had everything.
